Gaza Reality - Photo story project
Who I am
Hello, I am Mahmoud, 36, living in Gaza city where you can find all contradictions. I am a freelance photographer.
When I was 16, I used to take photos with my camera phone. Since then, I have discerned that photography is my spiritual soulmate.
I witnessed Four consecutive armed conflicts since 2008 and two uprisings (intifadas) in 1987 and 2000 and 2021 and living my whole life under occupation and blockade. Hence, I decided to photograph the hardships of life in Gaza and the suffering of people. I used to borrow a camera from my friend to cover conflicts, protests, and the difficult living situation, like other photographers in Gaza.
WHY Gaza?!
Gaza is a home of almost two million who are isolated from the outside world and locked into a tiny 365 square kilometers-enclave. Living in Gaza has been compared to being in an outdoor prison, or even worse. This is why most people imagine Gaza as a place torn and wrecked by violence and conflict, but still, you can find hundreds of positive and inspiring photos and stories for women, men and children are yet to be told to the outside world. Throughout my photography journey, I met a lot of women, men, and youth who showed a great courage and determination to live and build a better future for them and their country. I met young boys and girls who have talents and want their dreams to get true and real despite all challenges and difficult situation in Gaza. So, I decided to turn my lens away to find examples of hopes, strength, and resilience in Gazan people.
All photos and stories will be gathered and published online as an electronic book named "Gaza Reality", so you can find it easily and you can see all photos were taken and all stories written about Gaza and her people.
Gaza Reality captures the daily life of the Palestinians who are living in cities, villages, and refugee camps across the Strip. Will focus on children, women, and men who are trying to build a better future for Gaza against all odds and challenges. I am going to photograph those young women and men who are challenging all borders to start up their businesses and practice their talents and skills. Those fathers and mothers who are working hard to provide for their families and children.
