I teach at an alternative high school program in North End Winnipeg. I have tasked myself with finding readings that are relevant to our students' lives. Currently our students only have access to Social Studies readings which still use the word "Aboriginal" and ask students to name "contributions" of European settlers with no mention of the reserve system, land grabs, and residential school.
Our students deserve better representations as they each hold multiple identities which our social structures marginalize most. By choosing work by those who also share these identities, we provide meaningful representations which can help these students make sense of how and why specific peoples are marginalised and how this can change.
