Help Las Lagunas Residents Survive Barrick Gold

Residents of six small communities near Cotuí, Dominican Republic, are living in highly toxic conditions and need funds to secure food and medicine as they await relocation by the Dominican state. 600 families were abandoned by the Dominican state when it allowed gold mining corporation Barrick Gold to build its facilities on their land. Over the last 8 years, a tailings dam containing cyanide, sulphur and other toxic chemicals has left families sick, unable to practice agriculture and without a food or water source. Between 2013 and 2015, 85 community members died in circumstances linked to toxicity.

Members of the communities' organizing committee, Comite Nuevor Renacer, have asked for donations to buy basic food and medicine as they await the Dominican state's decision on their relocation. For more than two years, they held an encampment near the mine's social responsibility offices, have marched hundreds of kilometers, protested and faced police brutality. Their struggle is almost coming to an end, as the state is poised to decide in the next few months, but they need our help to get to the finish line.

Los residentes de seis pequeñas comunidades cerca de Cotuí, República Dominicana, viven en condiciones altamente tóxicas y necesitan fondos para asegurar alimentos y medicinas mientras esperan la reubicación del estado dominicano. 

El estado dominicano abandonó a 600 familias cuando permitió que la corporación minera de oro Barrick Gold construyera sus instalaciones en sus tierras. En los últimos 8 años, una presa  que contiene cianuro, azufre y otras sustancias químicas tóxicas ha dejado a las familias enfermas, incapaces de practicar la agricultura y sin una fuente de alimentos o agua. Entre 2013 y 2015, 85 miembros de la comunidad murieron en circunstancias relacionadas con la toxicidad.

Los miembros del comité organizador de las comunidades, Comite Nuevor Renacer, han pedido donaciones para comprar alimentos y medicamentos básicos mientras esperan la decisión del estado dominicano sobre su reubicación. Durante más de dos años, mantuvieron un campamento cerca de las oficinas de responsabilidad social de la mina, marcharon cientos de kilómetros, protestaron y enfrentaron la brutalidad policial. Su lucha está llegando a su fin, ya que el estado está a punto de decidir en los próximos mese.  Necesitan nuestra ayuda para llegar al fin de su lucha.
