We are a group of seven passionate students at the University of Essex (UK). We run a volunteering project called Refugee Teaching Programme, where we help refugees in Essex to integrate into our community by teaching English, providing a welcoming environment and helping them with other struggles they might face. We are all studying different subject areas of social science related to migration and human rights. We are aiming to expand our work by going to the Calais Jungle, which is a refugee camp in France widely known for its inhumane conditions for refugee families. People in the camp are alienated from society and lack basic necessities, especially in winter.
Therefore, we intend to volunteer in Calais in January 2019 with the NGO Care4Calais to engage with the people, distribute foodstuffs and clothes, as well as teaching English and French. The money raised will go towards our traveling and living expenses and the remaining money will be used to support local NGOs in Calais.
Furthermore, to raise awareness about this issue and to fight stereotypes about migration in our society we will capture our experiences in form of a documentary which will be released after our trip.
We would greatly appreciate any donations and thank you for all your future support!
