The mission of Angel Flight East is to provide free air transportation to qualified patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times.
Angel Flight East (AFE) is Pennsylvania's first and largest provider of free air transportation for medically needy patients. Harry Morales, a general aviation pilot, wanted to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He founded Angel Flight East, with the help of Jeff Kahn and Joe Staples, among others. Their vision and commitment to the principles of public benefit flying drove the dynamic force of what was to become AFE. Immediately, the organization began to fill the gap between the need to access crucial medical care at a distance and the high cost of transportation to get there.
In 1993, the first year of operations, AFE's small band of new volunteer pilots flew 17 missions. Today, 300 to 400 medical missions are flown each year in a 28-state area. Volunteer pilots are AFE's greatest asset, and are the heart and core of Angel Flight East! All flights that are coordinated by AFE are provided FREE to patients, in part because our volunteer pilots donate their time and expertise, aircraft, fuel, and airport fees for each and every mission! Our pilots have a passion for helping others!
Angel Flight East facilitates transportation in the Eastern region of the United States, and for destinations beyond our reach, we link with other volunteer pilot organizations. Anyone who requests a flight must be medically stable, able to board an aircraft, and fly in a small single or twin engine aircraft. Our volunteer pilots use their private planes to fly our patients to their destinations. These men and women pay for all expenses for each flight request.
