II Festival Afro-Montuvio

Hello dear soon-to-be-donor! 

We are a group of Montuvios and Afro-esmeraldeños  bringing artists and performers together for the "II Festival Afro-Montuvio" in Calceta, Manabi. This festival seeks to celebrate African and Montuvio ancestry in the northern coasts of Ecuador.

Linver Nazareno and Alexandra Cusme (performers and cultural promoters),  together with friends and family, came last year to hold a small afro-montuvio encounter in the city of Calceta. For a night we shared contrasts and similarities between the afro and montuvio forms of expression.  From that small encounter the idea to host a bigger festival was born. 

The festival will be held in the middle of September and we already have the space to host it, as well as a number of artists very interested in coming. We want to ensure that different acts can come to the festival, but the biggest hurdle is the expense in transportation for groups with many members coming from far away.

We are a not-for-profit festival and all proceedings from donations will go towards facilitating travel, logistics, and remuneration for performing artists.

Both our cultures, Montuvia and Afro-esmeraldeña, are in constant threat of assimilation into mere folklore artifacts for the mass consumption of society. This assimilation process takes the wide array of cultural expressions of our peoples, and reduces them to sterile stereotypes ready to fit with what dominating society deems to be "cultural" or not.  

In light of this we seek autonomy and resistance. We seek spaces not bound by institutional pressure and to make this happen we need to rely on your help. 

One of the ways to accrue funds for a festival is to charge festival goers for attendance, however we want to make sure this festival will be accessible to everyone, which is why we won't be charging for attendance.

The festival will last 3 days and we will host workshops, talks, classes, and performances with an afro-ecuadorian and montuvio thematic. During the day we will talk, share, teach, learn, and convene in regards to our identities and the intersections that shape them. During the night we will have colorful performances for the whole family ranging from marimba music, "amorfino" improvisation, afro-pacific poetry, and traditional montuvio songs.
Festival-goers will camp on site and share responsibilities in running the show, as well as participating in direct democracy to better plan the festival's next occurrence.

While seeking to continue to preserve and pass-on our culture, we performed different activities last year with the children of our communities. Your donation will help us continue with these efforts including more artists and performers in the process.

Somos un grupo de Montuvios y Afro-esmeraldeños juntando artistas para el "II Festival Afro-Montuvio" en Calceta, Manabí. Este festival busca celebrar la ancestralidad Africana y Montuvia en la costa norte del Ecuador.

Linver Nazareno and Alexandra Cusme (artistas y promotores culturales),  junto a amigos y familia, se juntaron el año pasado para realizar un pequeño encuentro afro-montuvio en la ciudad de Calceta. Por una noche compartimos contrastes y similitudes entre las formas de expresión afro y montuvias. De ese pequeño encuentro, nació la idea de sostener un festival más grande.  

El festival se realizara a mediados de Septiembre y ya tenemos el espacio para sostenerlo, como también varios artistas muy interesados en asistir. Queremos asegurarnos de que varios actos puedan presentarse en el festival, pero el mayor obstáculo es el gasto de transporte para los grupos que vienen desde mas lejos.

Somos un festival sin fines de lucro y todos los ingresos de las donaciones serán usadas para facilitar el viaje, logística, y remuneración de los artistas.

Ambas culturas, Montuvia y Afro-esmeraldeña, estan bajo una constante amenaza de asimilación a meros artefactos folclóricos para el consumo masivo de la sociedad. Este proceso asimilativo toma la amplia gama de expresiones culturales de nuestros pueblos, y los reduce a estereotipos estériles listos para encajar a lo que la sociedad determina como "cultural" o no.

Frente a esto buscamos autonomía y resistencia. Buscamos espacios que no estén atados por presiones institucionales y para que esto suceda necesitamos de tu ayuda.

El festival durara 3 días en los cuales ofreceremos talleres, conversatorios, clases, y actuaciones con una temática afro-ecuatoriana y montuvia. Durante el día vamos a conversar, compartir, enseñar, aprender y convenir en torno a nuestras identidades y a las intersecciones que las conforman. Durante la noche tendremos coloridas actuaciones para toda la familia, desde música de marimba, improvisación de amorfinos, poesía afro-pacifica, y canciones tradicionales montuvias.

Los asistentes acamparán en el sitio y compartirán las responsabilidades de rodar el show, también como ser parte de una democracia directa para planificar de mejor manera la próxima edición del festival.

Mientras buscamos preservar y reproducir nuestras culturas, realizamos varias actividades con los niños de nuestras comunidades. Tu donación nos ayudará a continuar con estos esfuerzos incluyendo a más artistas en el proceso.
