My name is Kamila Shakur. I’m a Black queer artist, caretaker & organizer who was born & raised in Detroit, MI. I am a single parent and a disabled woman. I’ve been navigating houseless-ness & displacement for over a year to separate from the abuse of my biological mother and my children’s father. I also have been homeschooling my children for several years.
My community and my art is what sustains me, as I have no permanent address to collect disability & no consistent support system. It is my goal to find patrons want to support Black artists. Funds will help me with everything from living expenses for myself & the children to supplies we need to continue learning & creating.
We will be leaving Michigan for California as soon as possible so that we can access the support and opportunities we have there. Until then, I am focused on staying in the only safe place we’ve been to that accommodates my disabilities. The constant movement has taken a toll on all three of us and we need to stay put so that we can be well & access the resources we have a right to.
I need about $8,000 to cover housing, food, transportation, clothes, shoes, masks, homeschool supplies and art supplies.
Consider becoming a patron and sharing this with those who appreciate Black artists.
Especially those of us who are disabled.
Support us while we are still here.
Salaam.
